How Much Does It Take

by Kevin Sinclair

She sits there quietly
Tears welling in her eyes
How much longer can she bear
The pain I can’t disguise
Is it fair that I play my games
Only to build my guilt and hurt
I don’t want to see her suffer
Just because I feel like dirt.

How much can a friendship bear
Before it falls apart?
How much does it take
To break a heart?

Why must my life be
Full of fears and regrets
And why do I burn holes
Into my safety nets
All she wants to do is help
But I seem intent on destroying
As I look for rejection
Can’t stand the pleasure of enjoying.

How much can a friendship bear
Before it falls apart?
How much does it take
To break a heart?

I know how it seems
Looks like I’m out of control
I have no defences as
I’m my own enemy patrol
I shoot myself up leaving
Two of us wounded and hurt
There are no answers as I
Grind myself slowly into the dirt.
