I Shall Never Own Her

by Kevin Sinclair

She is not a prize that I have won,
Nor is she my possession to be proud of,
To show off as if I created her.
She is a person with thoughts and feelings
That I want to respect and appreciate,
To give my love to her without expecting return.

She does not reflect my image to the world,
Instead she lives her own life,
Sharing some of her moments with me.
I don’t try to change or control her,
I only encourage her growth as a person
And I shall never own her.

She does not sit up on my pedestal
Because I know that she’d fall down.
Instead she stands by my side,
Walking through this world in her own way,
Free to make her own mistakes,
Just as I am free to make mine.

And when we are together,
We are two and not one,
Each an individual in our own right.
There are no expectations placed upon her,
I accept her as she is,
I love her for what she is.
