This Long Distance Race

by Kevin Sinclair

Towards home
And the silver stars are shining bright
Days alone
This highway continues on way out of sight
I’m leaving all my sorrow behind
As each new day is a dream
That turns into a challenge
I’m a citizen of this time and place
Who is praying for peace to come
At the end of this long distance race.

Sunsets red
And the clouds are but shadows on my face
Warm beds
And the whore in my dreams lies awake
With her long slender legs spread
I don’t want to change places
There are no other races
I have no need to win any more
As all that I have is
All that I have ever been in my life.

Open doors
And at the end of each tunnel is a light
Silent wars
Where words no longer sound for equal rights
But she’s waiting for me I know
Our yesterdays are but memories
Our tomorrows but wistful dreams
Today I’m flying the flag at half mast
Because we’re all bound to die
At the end of this long distance race.
