With Red Roses (and Golden Autumn Leaves)

by Kevin Sinclair

I tried to write you a song
But the melody came out all wrong
I tried to write you a poem
But I couldn’t get it to rhyme
So I put it aside for a day
And was going to come back
To it some other time
But every time I try to express my feelings
In words you can understand
Communication deserts me
My creativity has gone.

And to say I love you
Would mean so much to me
But still I try to colour those words
With red roses and golden autumn leaves.

I sit alone in my cold writers room
Dreaming of brilliant lines to write
But when pen touches paper
It’s as if somebody turned off the light
Feelings were made to be shared
But my feelings for you go unnoticed
As my fears chock me inside
I know I’m trying too hard
Perhaps I should change my approach
And hold my heart in my hands
As I say it simple and sweet.

To say the words “I love you”
Would mean so much to me
But still I try to colour those words
With red roses and golden autumn leaves.

If you’re sitting alone tonight
Reading the poems I wrote
Remember me in your dreams
As my heart is fog bound in winter
I’m waiting for springtime to come
When new leaves form on the trees
And blossom is in full bloom
Maybe next time I’ll express my feelings
In words that you can understand
But until then, please be patient
And to you, my love I will send.
